One of the hottest job in 21sty century is a job of data scientist. India’s big data market is expected to hit US$ 1 Billion in 2015. This is in line with the global trend where the global big data market is expected to hit a whopping US$ 8 Billion. So the need for data scientists is immediate, not just in India but globally, a demand that is unlikely to abate in the near future. Today, a number of academicians, economists, physicists, mathematicians, statisticians, data miners and programmers are exploring careers in data science.
So bad news first, if you are a fresh candidate you cannot get the post of a data scientist. The story might be a bit different if you are from an IIT or a BITS background but still it is less likely that you will be offered the role of a data scientist. But the good news is that even if you cannot become a data scientist right away does not mean that you cannot become a data scientist ever. You can get started in the industry and work your way up.
Here are some points that will help you in your data scientist career:
Stop worrying about the job title and the initial salary. Work and learn for two years; you will reach the cream zone of experience. Never stop learning. The trends change faster than you can imagine. Once you are out of your learning habit it becomes difficult to catch up and embrace new technologies. Try to work with tools that are gaining popularity not the ones that are losing it. You often do not have the option but to use old tech. But keep an eye open for opportunities to work with trendy tools.
The skills that they teach you at the universities in 90% of the cases are not really useful in real life data science projects. In real projects these 4 data coding skills are needed:
Every company wants to have people with at least a little bit of real life experience. But how do you get real life experience, if you need real life experience to get your first job? And the answer is, Pet projects which means that you come up with a random data project idea that makes you excited. Then you simply start to build it. You can think about it as a small startup, but make sure that you keep focusing on the data science part of the project and you can just ignore the business part.
If you haven’t managed to find a mentor, you can still find your first one at your first company. This is going to be your first data science related job, so try not to focus on big money or on super-fancy startup atmosphere. Focus on finding an environment, where you can learn and improve yourself. This will give you the proper information and lessons that will help in the future.
